Steps you should take if you find error in credit card statement
Step 1 : If you notice any billing error in your card
statement, lodge a complaint with your card issuer
within 60 days of the statement date. Mention
particulars such as your full name, card account
number type of ard and the value of the disputed
charges. In case you register a complaint at the
issuer's customer service number, keep a record of
the complaint number, keep a record of the complaint
number and the person you spoke to. If you lodge a
complaint in writing, make sure you take an
acknowledgement for your reference.
Step 2 : Once your card issuer receives the
complaint, it will reverse the charges on a temporary
basis and conduct further investigations within a
period of 90 days, to verify the authenticity of
these charges. During this period, your card issuer
cannot restrict you from using your card not can your
card account be closed either.
Step 3 : Do not make any payment for the
discrepant items while these charges are being
investigated and until you receive a satisfactory and
complete explanation for the same from your issuer.
Step 4 : As per the RBI guidelines, you can
also request your card issuer to provide you with
documentary evidence (if required) for the disputed
charges levied on your bill.
Step 5 : Upon due verification by the issuer,
if it is concluded that the errors in charges were
genuine, the card issuer must intimate it to you in
writing. How ever, if the bill is proved correct by
the issuer, you will owe your issuer the disputed
amount plus finance charges(if any).
